STRETCHING THE DISTANCE
Spartan Tactical Carbine Class
“Shooting is the most perishable skill that human beings have,” according to Gregg Coker, assistant instructor for Spartan Tactical. This set the tone for the three-day Spartan Tactical basic carbine course. Spartan Tactical is run by Jim Smith, a man with over 20 years experience serving in various elite units. He strongly believes that shooting should be used as a vehicle to teach thinking and complex problem solving.

AIMPOINT M4S
Evolutionary Design
The supremacy of the Red Dot Sight (RDS) is well known. The probability of a hit using an RDS is enhanced, especially at close range, in dim/low light and against moving targets. The Aimpoint is a Passive Red Dot Collimator Reflex Sight, and is easily the most popular and successful RDS available today. The latest version of this system is the M4S, an evolutionary step above its predecessor, the M4.

NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET
Winchester Bonded Handgun Bullets Win Federal Law Enforcement Contracts
The two FBI contract awards won by Winchester in the past year represent the largest dollar amount of any federal law enforcement ammunition contracts ever awarded. The most important information for S.W.A.T. readers is the bullet technology developed by Winchester that allowed them to win these contracts against competitors with very well established and well performing bullet designs. The author examines the FBI bullet performance testing protocols in detail.

CAR WARS
Gunfighting and Vehicles
Opinions about what happens to bullets around cars may not be based on study and experience, even if you ask someone with the title “Firearms Instructor.” Not many people have the opportunity to look at empirical data after actual gunfights, to examine what really happens when lead starts flying through cars, or to perform ballistic tests on vehicles. Few have the opportunity to speak with dozens of individuals who have been in gunfights around vehicles. Fewer still have applied such knowledge and implemented training programs that address this difficult subject. However, there are a few training organizations that offer Vehicle Assault training. And that’s right, S.W.A.T. was there.

BARGAIN BASEMENT BLASTER
DPMS Sportical
DPMS has just introduced the Sportical, a gun that the company claims bridges the gap between sporting and tactical rifles. The gun has a number of noteworthy features, but the real attention-getter is the suggested retail price—just $699. This price was so low that it was with a healthy degree of skepticism that the author purchased a Sportical. What happened next? Did the Sportical make a believer out of him?

VETERAN WARHORSES BACK IN ACTION
Federal Program Brings Needed Equipment To Local Agencies
In the neverending search to better equip Deputies and stay within the Sheriff’s Office budget, we need to be creative. The author’s department has utilized the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO) program for several years and received equipment that was paid for by Federal tax dollars. The DRMO program allows excess military equipment to be made available to local law enforcement. Recently the author’s SO received 50 1911A1 pistols -- a selection of Colt, Springfield, Remington Rand and Ithaca -- through DRMO. How are these old warhorses performing?

MEDICAL FIRST RESPONDER
Learning From Paramedics
Proper combat training saves lives by giving us the tools to defend ourselves and those who depend on us. However, we must face the real possibility that after the last shot is fired we may need to administer medical treatment to ourselves and/or others. Combat training, without any thought to treating casualties, is only preparing for half a battle. The good news is that quality medical classes are beginning to catch up with the number of quality combat classes.

BUILD A SNIPER SNOW CAMO SCREEN!
Portable Concealment Made Easy
A simple camo screen can provide outstanding camouflage as well as a barrier to conceal small movements made by the sniper—a real concern in cold weather, when he may need to change gloves or retrieve gear from his pack. This camo screen takes about an hour to construct and can be built with common hardware store items and a bit of military surplus for a total cost of about $25.
