Self-Training Myths
Deadly Drawbacks
One major problem with self-training is the lack of feedback. In conventional instruction, a trainer will first lecture and then demonstrate how a particular skill set is performed. The student will then perform the task several times, with the trainer providing corrections as necessary. This immediate feedback and correction moves the training along at a relatively rapid rate. Those who believe that formal training is neither necessary nor useful may often go to a range/field/quarry and blast off X amount of rounds. Going to a range by yourself or in the company of one or more who are also shooting may mean that no one will be watching another shooter's technique. Or, those who may casually watch are not able to properly diagnose another shooter's problem. And that's just one drawback. The author covers several others, all in meticulous and thought-out detail.

Can You Hear Me Now?
SureFire Fast-Attach Suppressors
Besides the overall hearing protection offered by a firearm suppressor, the enhancement of command and control during lethal force incidents is often cited as the motivating factor behind the adoption and use of a suppressor. SureFire, a name known for high quality flashlights and other illumination tools, has entered the suppressor market in a major way. SureFire's company policy is to make the very best possible product, regardless of cost. How is SureFire living up to that policy in the Suppressor Division?

Yavapai Firearms Academy Close-Range Pistol Tactics
Think More, Shoot Less
The author reports on an unconventional custom-tailored class that is not in Yavapai Firearms Academy's catalog of courses. That's because YFA owner Louis Awerbuck was asked if he would put together a class to explore close-range weapon potential in an enclosed environment. Emphasis was placed on shooting combatives up close and personal, which so often is the distance where shooting encounters begin. When a gunman has his gun on you up close, do you simply draw your weapon and shoot faster than he does? Is your action going to be quicker than his reaction, even though he has his gun on you? You might not even get your pistol out before he starts shooting. Are you in a gunfight or a fistfight? “Start thinking, gentlemen...”

Detonics .45 ACP Combatmaster

Now Detonics is back and so is the Combatmaster. Learn more about Detonics past and present and the iconic Combatmaster.

Feed the Puppy!
Tac Pro Primary Shotgun Class
The Primary Shotgun Class at Tac Pro Shooting Center is designed to educate and to explore the capabilities of your chosen shotgun. No other weapon is more versatile as a result of ammunition selection than the shotgun. No other weapon system is more misunderstood. During this intense three-day course at Tac Pro, the author learns more about his shotgun than he imagined possible.
by Tim McCord

Fitness
Separating Fact From Fiction
To be truly effective in a fight, one must possess the proper tools. This includes mindset, reliable equipment and being in good physical shape. Even if someone has trained under all the top-tier instructors and owns the best firearms and ancillary equipment available, it does them little good if they don't have enough strength or stamina to stay in the fight. As with training, tactics and weapons, separating fact from fiction is the first step in knowing what really works. The author, a former Marine Drill Instructor, has authored, co-authored or edited 16 books on strength and fitness.

Elite Unit Report
BORTAC: United States Border Patrol Tactical Unit
The U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Unit, known by the acronym BORTAC, is the international special operations force of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. BORTAC and its specialist operators carry out some of the most demanding and dangerous missions that fall under the jurisdiction of CBP. These missions include tracking and intercepting illegal immigrants, drug smugglers and terrorists. BORTAC also responds to disasters and critical incidents and provides support and training to domestic and foreign government agencies. The author traces the controversial history of this unit and reports on where BORTAC is now and how far it has come.
