The War on Terror
continues with no end in the foreseeable future. I have heard some people ask
the rhetorical question, "When will it end?" Pampered and spoiled by modern
society, they want a quick fix to a very difficult problem. We would be wise to
remember the words of Thomas Jefferson who said, "The price of freedom
is eternal vigilance."
For most of us, the "War on Terror" lacks any distinctive
features that we can put a finger on but, to paraphrase Supreme Court Justice
Potter Stewart, we know it when we see it.
Others, however, are involved in fighting terrorists up
close and personal. These brave individuals include our soldiers on the front
lines who have taken the fight to the enemy. It also includes law enforcement
agencies at all levels that train to fight against evil forces on our own soil.
As we rapidly approach the third anniversary of September
11, this issue of S.W.A.T. has in-depth articles on fighting terrorism.
They include training for hostage rescue, preparing private security for
terrorist acts and exclusive articles on two elite units–the Department of
Homeland Security's Special Reaction teams and Greece's EKAM,
which is tasked with providing security for the Olympics.
If you've become bored with the typical gun magazine's "gun-of-the-month club" and want serious information on training, tactics and firearms, S.W.A.T. is what you've been waiting for.
