editorial overview

For many, looking through catalogs such as those offered by Brownells, Gun Parts Corporation, or Jack First, Inc., may be analogous to attending their first S.H.O.T. Show. What's available in the way of gun parts and accessories is mind-blowing. The problem, especially for people just getting started in the shooting sports, becomes not only which weapon to buy, but also what will actually work.

The first place to start is not on Page One of a catalog. Rather, seek advice from knowledgeable sources such as other shooters and qualified firearms instructors... and, at the risk of sounding presumptuous, S.W.A.T. Magazine. One example of this is the article Customizing The AR-15: It's A Question Of Needs in this issue. Instead of randomly bolting on accessories to our base platform, a Bushmaster AR-15, time was taken to investigate and ensure that each accessory had a reason for being added.

Next, seek out formal instruction from a reputable instructor. Colonel Jeff Cooper once remarked that owning a pistol does not make a person armed any more than owning a piano makes one a musician -- words to live by.

With every issue, S.W.A.T. features articles on training and tactics, with critiques of various schools from around the country. Additionally, you may want to check out the training calendar that we features every month as a public service. The S.W.A.T. Staff has studied at those locations and we're proud to promote them.
