editorial overview

Thinking “outside the box” means different things to different people. For someone diagnosed with cancer it might entail considering a radically new, unproved procedure. To an architect, it may mean incorporating computer technology into a building design. To S.W.A.T. Magazine it means rejecting the “favorite gun of the month club,” and offering our readers articles and information which can be used in the real world.

Reading about the latest Super Blaster in another magazine my be entertaining, but does little to prepare you for an up close and personal confrontation on the mean streets. As Steinbeck wrote, “The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.”

Two examples of S.W.A.T.’s approach to “thinking outside the box” appear in the October issue. The first is the article Street Gangs: Domestic Terrorists. While groups such as al-Qaeda pose a very real threat to our security, the mainstream press pays little attention to the thousands of gang members who stalk our streets daily.

The second article is High-Threat Vehicle Dismounts. Carjackings and armed robberies involving vehicles are, sadly, becoming more prevalent every day. Do you have a plan for a violent encounter while driving with your family? This article may help prepare you for a worst-case scenario.
