editorial overview

Flying is probably the safest form of transportation available. After the events of September 11, however, commercial airlines took a heavy hit financially because so many people are now scared to fly. Although life itself is a gamble, and each of us take certain risks just by getting out of bed each day, the sky is once more one of the safest places to be. This is due in no small part to the dedicated men and women of the Federal Air Marshals. This month one of our feature articles examines the history and training of the United States Federal Air Marshal program.

In this issue are evaluations on half a dozen firearms. From .50 caliber rifles to .32 ACP pistols, you are sure to find something of interest that fits into your favorite type of activity. Starting with the Big Boys is an article on Barrett’s Model 99 .50 caliber rifles. These rifles produced three-shot, seven-inch groups for the author—at 1,000 yards! Towards the smaller end of the scale we evaluate the .32 and .380 ACP Guardian pistols manufactured by North American Arms. In the middle are two semiautomatic rifles and two .40 caliber semi-auto handguns, including Springfield Armory’s XD pistol. As always you can count on us telling you what we liked—and what we didn’t—in our evaluations.

Also in store for readers of the May issue, is a review of the 2001 IDPA National Championships, an article on shoulder arms for VIP protection teams, and much more with a total of 1`3 feature articles complementing our regular columns and departments.

North American Arms .32 and .380 ACP Guardian Pistol

Springfield Armory’s XD Pistol
When the superb Glock pistols with their polymer frames were first introduced into the United States most shooters viewed them skeptically, wondering if a “plastic” had what it takes for a fighting handgun.
