Although there are exceptions, most people start out shooting firearms for
sport and only later become "practical" shooters and begin thinking
about self-defense. Once the transition has been made, for most individuals the
thirst for knowledge is hard to quench. Questions like which firearm is best
suited for a particular task is common. In this issue we take a look at two rifles
that often top the "which is best" list-the AR-15 and the Mini-14.
This head-to-head test is the direct result of reader's requests. Things like
initial cost, accuracy, reliability, ergonomics and magazine availability/cost
are all covered in the article. Other firearm evaluations in this issue include
the Taurus PT-111 and the Winchester Model 73.
After a decision has been made on which firearm(s) to purchase,
the next step for most people is to hone their skills by enrolling
in a training course with a reputable school or instructor. A "must
read" article in this issue for anyone considering going to
such a school is Firearms Academies: What To Take/What To Expect.
Pat Rogers, an internationally acclaimed trainer, shares his insights
and experience so that you will get the maximum benefit from any
class you attend.
Also included among our eleven feature articles is a look at the ever evolving
and improving Gunsite, a piece on Home Security, exclusive behind the set coverage
of the hit movie Black Hawk Down that examines the roll of Hollywood's combat
advisors, and much more. The above is in addition, of course, to six regular
columns and six departments.
