editorial overview

Skillful marketing is a wonderful thing—at least for those doing the marketing. For decades we have been told if we buy Brand X we will look better, smell better, be attractive to the opposite sex and live longer and happier lives. Yeah, right. At least those of us involved in the tactical arena are immune to such techniques. Or are we?

The response of some people when they get around a new firearm is akin to listening to the sounds at a Fourth of July fireworks display—a lot of “Oooing” and Awwwing.” When the bright lights stop and silence sets in, however, amazement turns to less enthusiastic remarks like, “That was kind of neat.” In this issue we take a look at a recently released shotgun and attend a tactical course, both of which have received favorable “ink.” And, while both had their good points, our findings were not as spectacular as the hype they’ve received elsewhere. Caveat Emptor—Let the buyer beware! Good words to live by.

We must never forget the events of September 11, 2001. Likewise, we must be prepared for the eventuality that it can happen again. Those who have read Sun Tzu know that one of the basic premises for surviving a deadly encounter is to know one’s enemies and be prepared. Towards that goal in this issue we have included articles on an Israeli Civil Guard sniper unit, a feature on Spain’s GEO anti-terrorist unit and a piece on personal equipment for high-risk environments.

Additionally, the July issue is packed with firearm evaluations and training courses, five regular columns and six departments. In short, something for everyone.
