editorial overview

Since the evil acts perpetrated against our country on September 11, Americans are justifiably more concerned about their safety than ever before. S.W.A.T. Magazine appreciates this fact and takes a close look at Homeland Security, S.W.A.T.-style, with Clint Smith’s article Team Tactics for Families. Cutting through the hype seen so often in the popular media, we also dispel some common myths with K. Dillon’s article Bodyguard: The True Story. To better understand the role of our allies in the fight against terrorism, Eitan Meyr writes about Germany’s Federal Border Guard. Need some good information on firearms and techniques? This issue has article on the Mossberg 500 20 gauge shotgun with an exhaustive field evaluation, we torture-test Para-Ordnance’s new LDA .45, long-range shooting with a Bushmaster Urban Sniper Rifle, and a look at Colt’s Detective Special. We have also included an article on what to look for and what to avoid when buying used firearms and much, much more.

Beginning with this, our December issue, S.W.A.T. takes on a new look going full color through the entire magazine. The first of several new columns, Enemy At The Gate, makes its debut in this issue with a history on the racist roots of gun control. Coming in February, will be a new column from noted expert Harry Humphries, and articles on protecting a nuclear site and chemical/biological warfare—all in a new, easier to read layout.

The International Defensive Pistol Association requires the use of practical firearms holsters and accessories. Competitors must balance the triad of combat shooting skills, which include speed, power and accuracy.
Rob Pincus

Mossberg’s Model 500 20 Gauge:
The Home Defense Solution?
S.W.A.T.’s editor gets out from behind the desk and into the field to evaluate Mossberg’s Model 500, 20 gauge shotgun to evaluate it as a home-defense shotgun capable of being used by either member of a husband and wife team. Some common myths are graphically laid to rest, and tips are given to optimize this firearm for the role discussed.
Denny Hansenl

The Fighting Stance And Length Of Pull
The M16A2 has a length of pull of 13.5 inches. While this may be fine for a competitive shooter, in the author’s opinion it is too long for an operator wearing body armor and a load bearing vest. This detailed report describes why and how a stock should be shortened for combat personnel.
Patrick A. Rogers

Bushmaster’s Urban Sniper Rifle
For this report, Steve Malloy had Bushmaster build him a custom rifle based on their DCM match rifle and then tested it with 25 commercial loads for accuracy. The result was a rifle that averaged .97-inch groups at 100 yards with the top five loads, and had no problems whatsoever.
Steve Malloy

Colt’s Detective Special:
A Capable Classic
First introduced in 1926, Colt’s Detective Special is still considered by many to be one of the finest “snubbies” ever made. This article takes a look at the history of the “Dick Special,” and the author shoots it at distances of 3 to 100 yards. The results just might surprise you.
Steve Lee

The Para-Ordnance LDA .45:
A 1911 With Double-Action Capability!
Thinking of purchasing a Para-Ordnance 7.45 LDA pistol but not sure if the double-action design will hold up? In this article author Walt Rauch fires 5,000 round of .45 ACP using 26 magazines and enlisting the aid of a local gun club. When the pistol got too hot to handle it was doused in water and testing resumed. You won’t want to miss the results of this test.
Walt Rauch

Bodyguard:
The True Story
The movie The Bodyguard starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, while entertaining, was far from what actually happens in the life a personal protection specialist. The author of this article is the “real deal” and he gives the reader an insider’s view of this exciting (and sometimes boring) occupation.
K. Dillon

Buying Used Firearms:
Avoiding The Headaches
You have finally located a firearm you have wanted for a long time, and it’s a real bargain. Or is it? The author offers some real good advice to tell if you are making good deal or simply buying someone else’s problems.
Patrick Sweeney

Trapdoor Rifles
Clint Smith writes about the interesting history of trapdoor rifles and then test fires them to see what they are capable of today. He recommends, “take this piece of American history to the range for a taste of the smell and recoil of the old days.”
Clint Smith
